Tree Removals – What’s Involved?

September Tree Care Tips from Alt Arb

As summer comes to an end and nesting bird season draws to a close as we head into Autumn, it’s important to be thinking about the safety of your trees before the winter storms begin to hit.

With the recent droughts and then sudden rainfall many trees have had a hard time over the recent months, but the real question is, does your tree need maintenance or complete removal?

Tree removal is sometimes unavoidable. A storm-damaged tree, a diseased specimen, or one that’s become unsafe or is simply in the wrong place may all need to be carefully taken down. But what happens when a professional team like Alt Arb carries out a tree removal?

🌲 Step 1: Safety Assessment

Every tree removal begins with a site visit and risk assessment. We consider:

  • What’s the condition of the tree?

  • Are there signs of tree pests or diseases?

  • How dangerous is the tree, is it dangerously leaning or is it hollow inside?

  • What’s the proximity to buildings, roads, or are there Power Lines present?

  • Is there access to the site for our equipment?

Safety is our top priority for both our teams and our clients and we regularly carry out written Risk Assessments and Method Statements for our work, sometimes referred to as RAMS.

🌲 Step 2: Planning

Not every tree can be felled in one go. Depending on the space available, there are two main approaches:

  • Tree Felling – Cutting the tree at the base just above ground level and letting the tree fall as a whole. This is only achieved when there is suitable space available as in often undertaken in our Woodland Management.

  • Sectional Dismantling – Carefully removing the tree in pieces by our highly skilled and experienced tree surgery teams. Sections of the tree are either allowed to free fall to the ground or additional equipment such as Rigging Equipment or Mobile Cranes are used to lift and lower sections of the tree.

🌲 Step 3: The Removal

Our highly skilled and experienced arborists either climb the tree using a rope and harness or work from a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP), taking the tree down branch by branch as required. Larger timber sections are lowered safely to the ground using Rigging Ropes to avoid any damage to lawns, sheds, fences, or neighbouring gardens.

🌲 Step 4: Clear-Up and Disposal

The smaller branches of the tree are chipped into wood chips and recycled at local farms and composting facilities but can also be utilised by our clients as wood mulch for gardens and commercial properties. The timber produced from the tree removal is often cut into manageable lengths for our clients to utilise as firewood. Larger trunk sections can also be turned into wood carvings or valuable planks to be turned into beautiful wooden furniture once carefully dried out.

🪵 Do You Really Need That Tree Removed?

Sometimes tree removal is the only option, but in other cases a tree may be made safe through careful pruning or reduction work to aid the health of the tree. We’ll always give you honest advice so you can make the best choice for your property and the environment.
